ABOUT THIS TOOLKIT
This Toolkit provides Store Management Teams with basic guidance on disability considerations that impact the company’s overall accessibility and diversity recruiting strategy. The goal is to build confidence in a way that helps managers make better-informed decisions about customers, candidates, and employees with disabilities while also mitigating the company’s risk of disability discrimination. This Toolkit should be viewed as a “living document” and may change over time as the need arises.
This Toolkit includes two sections – (1) Serving Customers with Disabilities and (2) Hiring and Managing Employees with Disabilities. Each section of this Toolkit highlights the company’s legal nondiscrimination responsibilities using easy-to-understand language, explains how the disability nondiscrimination requirements can affect store management, and provides practical solutions to eliminate barriers commonly experienced by individuals across disabilities during the shopping and job search processes.
We also offer a variety of resources in the Appendix of the Toolkit including a quick checklist for maintaining accessibility for your store, tips for providing customer service for people with disability for your frontline staff, and self-guided activities that reinforce understanding of new knowledge found in the Toolkit. Activities are also included that are relevant for store staff that can be used for ongoing professional development and training.
